Uit een publicatie in de  Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report uit 2002 blijkt dta het aantal mensen dat aan COPD overlijdt van 1971 tot 2000 gestegen is. Tevens was het verschil in de sterftecijfers tussen mannen en vrouwen opmerkelijk. Sterfte aan COPD onder vrouwen steeg sterker, en rond/vanaf 2000 is de sterfte onder vrouwen hoger dan onder mannen.
